A visit to industrial England!

The Knotts Wharf Canal and Railway Company, to give it its full name, is set down in the industrial heart of England, The Midlands. The layout is featured in Model Railroad Planning 2001 (Kalmbach) and is another of my examples of that classic British layout, the small terminus with hidden fiddle yard (storage tracks) built to be exhibited. The overall size is 12 x 3 feet on 3 baseboards. A canal, with a lock, runs along the front and the railway is at the back. A road, trees and buildings separate the two. The design premise was that when I was growing up, the railway was always "over there". Viewed from eye level this is indeed where it is.

The August 2006 Railway Modeller features Knotts Wharf as The Railway of the Month. This is an 8 page article with 19 illustrations. In the July 2006 issue's "Coming Next Month" column the mockup of the August issue showed KW as the cover photo! The actual issue did not I was disappointed to see. Incidentally, my first article with RM was the August 1954 issue 52 years ago!
